G & T Show Shore Leave 2015 Coverage – Kelly Meding Interview

G & T Show Shore Leave 2015 Coverage – Kelly Meding Interview At the 2015 Shore Leave convention, the lovely Janice got a chance to sit down with Star Trek author Kelly Meding.

Kelly is not even sure how she got into writing. She was perhaps twelve years old and wrote Sweet Valley High fanfiction. She did some screen plays and the like in high school and eventually got into writing fanfiction for various fandoms.

In college, she went to Los Angeles for a semester and studied under screenwriter Chris Young (he wrote Teen Angel). He was very encouraging and that helped Kelly realize that she should take the plunge and start trying to contact agents.

Kelly has been coming to Shore Leave for fourteen years! She was thrilled to come up to Howard Weinstein to tell him she had been published. She will now, at times, go to the Farpoint Convention.

Her most recent work is on Pangaea, the anthology based upon the what-if idea of what would have happened on Earth if the continents had never broken apart and drifted.

If she could grab any of her characters and toss them into any holodeck program, she thinks that she would take Edie Stone and put her into the Sherlock Holmes holodeck program. For her creative process, sometimes characters and plots have been tumbling around for a while. She has some forethought, sometimes it’s ideas and files that have been marinating, even for years! Her idea is to know how the characters got to the ‘zero point’, e. g. the place where they got to the start of the story. At times, a character biography and backstory will help and provide ideas in this area.

She mainly writes in urban fantasy and speculative fiction. She will also write some romance. She has some playlists and will listen to various songs or kinds of music in order to get into the writing zone.

Kelly’s advice to our listeners is, “Try to be truthful.”
