G & T Show Shore Leave 2015 Coverage – Kirsten Beyer

G & T Show Shore Leave 2015 Coverage – Kirsten BeyerAt the 2015 Shore Leave convention, the lovely Janice got to interview Star Trek author Kirsten Beyer.

Kirsten started writing after graduate school (her Master’s is in acting, so she has always been a storyteller, although this is a different format). She began writing when Voyager started and had an idea for an episode. She tried to teach herself how to write, for Voyager. She was invited to pitch by the time of the final four seasons of the show.

When the show ended, her friend Heather Jarman (who wrote for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) suggested that Kirsten be considered as a tie-in author and the rest is history!

Kirsten and Janice then talked about, considering how many people are using e-readers, how do you sign a Kindle?

If she could match any of her characters with a holodeck story, Kirsten chose to pit Buffy the Vampire Slayer against the Hirogen. As Janice said, Nick might like that. A bit. Okay, a lot.

Kirsten’s favorite part of the convention experience is that she gets some alone time and down time to herself. This is the only convention she goes to, so if you want to meet Kirsten, come to Shore Leave. She admits that the social media merry-go-’round can be difficult and has tried to self-contain her life as she wants to do it well. Plus, people would give her a hard time about Janeway‘s death.

Of course, not all stories can have a happy ending, and real life often doesn’t work like that. Kirsten says that characters speak and make themselves known. Whatever they are saying, she says, write it down! If something is going to be in her work, she feels, she will hear a line or a storyline more than once. What repeats tends to become a part of the story.

The universalism of the reading experience has changed, as people are able to alter font, etc., even the basics about what they are reading. Both Janice and Kirsten found that interesting, that the very experience has been altered.

Kirsten revealed that the comradery among the writers is very real. If they all lived in the same city, they’d be in each other’s homes all the time.

Thank you, Kirsten!
