G & T Show STLV 2015 Coverage – Al ‘Captain Geko’ Rivera Interview

G & T Show STLV 2015 Coverage – Al 'Captain Geko' Rivera InterviewAt Star Trek Las Vegas 2015, we conducted an interview with Star Trek Online‘s own Al ‘Captain Geko’ Rivera. SPOILER ALERT! HERE BE SPOILERS!

Terry Lynn and Nick congratulated Al on the great show the previous evening. There was a surprise from Denise Crosby. Chase Masterson also appeared!

Aron Eisenberg was there and he was a lot of fun, telling everyone to play a Ferengi.

Moving onto Star Trek Online, season 11 is coming out this autumn. The Admiralty System is being added, which allows a Captain to essentially become a Fleet Admiral. For every ship that you own, you can have an admiralty system ship. It works similarly to the duty officers system, although the rules differ. If you master your ship, the card will be updated.

For Cardassian and Borg, it works a bit like a merit system. Differing hazards and ships change the parameters, as the ships all have their own special abilities. These abilities might be -5 for any fire hazards, or a Dominion team bonus or the like. The Admiralty System is intended to be implemented alongside Season 11, so the intention is for dual implementation in October of 2015 or so.

The Iconian War is also set to end (although later). The next phase will be the aftermath of the war, known as ‘A New Dawn‘. The very next episode is ‘Butterfly‘, where Nog is returning. Al promises a satisfying and uplifting Star Trek-esque ending. It was help to kick off the new storyline and there will be a rebuilding and a feeling of hope and newness.

Chase is going to have a major role in the Mirror Universe, and she will be leading forces against the Terran Empire. There will be a new battlezone in the Badlands. The main storyline is very Deep Space Nine-like and will go into 2016, and the Chase and Mirror storyline will go even further into the future.

Al promises a First Count with a new race which will be voiced by our friend Kipleigh Brown! There will also be a new enemy, someone familiar but who has not yet been seen in the game universe.

Nick talked about how much he loved playing in Kobali Prime. Terry asked about new alliances within the game and how that is changing. Al says there is a benefit in the game to helping lesser fleets in need. You can improve your own level and your own bonus for doing this.

Al mentioned that he had received a beautiful shadow box from Clinton’s fleet which showed off their patches and imagery from in-game and they had clearly worked hard on this thank-you to him. He intimated that he has and had worked very hard on the game as did his team and was really touched by the gift, that he and his team intend to make a game that means something to people, and the gift showed him that it truly does. He said that he is sometimes down (like anyone is), but then he comes to events like STLV or receives something like the shadow box, and it helps him to know that it’s all worthwhile.

Nick confessed that he and Terry met through the game. Al has found, over the years, that the players are a kind of family, and he has been watching kids grow up through the game, players who he’s known for years and are now taller than he is.

Getting back to the game, Al revealed that several cast members will be brought back for the finale. Many of the actors from Star Trek: Voyager will be back, as will Denise Crosby, reprising her role as Sela.

He mentioned former Lead Writer Christine Thompson, who has recently left the company. Al said she had written something like four million words in the game. Her contribution was and is immeasurable, and she will be missed. He wished her well in the future.

They are hiring! There are openings for Writer/Content Designer.

Nick and Terry Lynn thanked Al for his time and for the game which they love, which has brought fans around the world together. It is all about the story, folks. That is their mission!
