G & T Show STLV 2015 Coverage – Armin Shimerman Interview

G & T Show STLV 2015 Coverage – Armin Shimerman InterviewAt Star Trek Las Vegas 2015, Nick and Terry Lynn were excited to conduct an interview with talented actor Armin Shimerman.

Armin says that his role on Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a bit of an accident. He had originally auditioned for the role of the principal and it went to a friend of his. He became their next school principal actor and stayed for three years even though they were supposed to kill him off!

Armin is involved in Shakespearean theatre. The theater is called Antaeus. They always use a double cast, e. g. there are two separate troupes and so the director works with both groups. Rather than have understudies, they are equals and perform on separate nights. If anyone gets work elsewhere, their equal steps in, so there is no loss of quality. They also work with younger actors to train them in classical theater. This includes his friend, Robert Pine‘s son, Chris.

I wonder where I’ve heard of that guy before?

They also help boys who have been in trouble with the law and help to bring them back into society. He is proud of their low recidivism rate and feels he is doing good and important work. The idea is to use the arts as a tool for dispute resolution. For instance, they use King Lear. The character Edgar has been kicked out and has to live on the streets, and the boys can relate to this character and feel comfortable opening up and telling their own story. The stories are worked on and, when the course is finished, the stories are compelling.

For girls, they work with unwed teenaged mothers and do the same thing. They use classical theater to emphasize empathy and nurturing. The stories are so well-received, the boys and girls feel wanted and wonderful, and the project helps with their reintegration into society.

Don’t forget 5th Passenger! Armin loves this role and is particularly happy to be playing a ‘nice guy’!

Armin also write a book as Quark! Check out The 34th Rule! It’s all about prejudice in particular, and how the Ferengi are treated.

Armin noted that the character of Quark developed over time. Originally, he was more of the writers’ idea but, as time went on, his own qualities began to grow into the character. He talked about working with Iggy Pop, too!

We were so happy and proud to interview Armin. He was a wonderfully gracious guest, and we thank him.

We hope you will support his many projects.
