G & T Show STLV 2015 Coverage – Paula Block & Terry Erdmann Interview
At Star Trek Las Vegas 2015, Terry Lynn and Nick sat down and talked with Paula Block and Terry Erdmann. Their latest book is all about the fashions and costumes of Star Trek over the last five decades.
Their inspiration for the book was John, the guy running the Star Trek part of CBS Products, who made the suggestion. They conducted research on Memory Alpha, by viewing episodes, checking displays of costumes from collectors including CBS.
One surprising part of the book was the fact that T’Pol of Star Trek: Enterprise wore over fifty separate costumes! Paula noted that these were not all uniforms as there were casual outfits and also some undercover clothing worn.
Terry Lynn asked if fashions influenced Star Trek, or was it the other way around? Paula said that some of the influence for costumes came from current day fashions. They praised the costume work in the JJ Abrams films; those uniforms are very clean-lined and visually appealing.
They conducted several interviews, including with JJ Abrams. Everyone kept mentioning Robert Blackman as an influence. They spoke with Blackman who was kind enough to write the introduction to the book!
Paula says that her favorite Starfleet uniform is the third season TNG. Nick likes the First Contact/Deep Space Nine black and gray uniforms.
Nick changed the subject and asked how Paula and Terry keep the magic alive, as they have been together for a long time. Terry says the secret is to truly be best friends. Paula adds that it is helpful to have common interests and the same intellectual interests, as it gives them more opportunities to spend positive time together.
Between writing fiction and nonfiction, Terry and Paula feel that they are falling in love with writing fiction. They are having a lot of fun writing fiction for Quark.
