G & T Show STLV 2016 – Rico Anderson Interview
As always, we enjoyed talking to Rico Anderson.
The Prosthetic Makeup Experience
First off, Terry Lynn and Gettysburg7 asked about what all that prosthetic makeup was like. He spent a good four hours every time, in the makeup chair. But it was exciting to be a part of Star Trek. So for him, it really helped get him into character. The teeth in particular helped him to feel alien. The teeth were sharp and they did not mold perfectly to his mouth. Because he had to be so cognizant of what was happening, that helped him stay in character. It helped him channel paranoid and anger.
He currently has a commercial out. However, the auditions process for large commercials for large companies takes quite a while. Then the process eventually narrowed down to five people out of a good five thousand. It is a lot of work, and it can sometimes be a little frustrating. But rejection is not necessarily due to a lack of skill. It can be a real numbers game. So his advice is: play the part as if it’s the only time you will ever play it. If you get the part, then you will play it again. If not, then it really did happen that way.
Nick related a story he read about Peter Dinklage. Rico agrees – even on your worst day, you get up and go back to the auditions. The process must go on. Even your personal fatigue and frustration can be used in acting.
His Favorite Genres
Rico loves acting in science fiction. He recalls it well from his childhood, so it’s a dream realized. Plus he loves drama and comedy. Rico has ended up acting in more comedies than he initially expected. Comedy can be harder; you aren’t trying to be funny. Instead, you are just playing it straight and hoping it turns out to be funny. As a result, he gave an example of Leslie Nielsen in the Naked Gun films.
Star Trek Beyond
Rico loved it! He really adored the nods to the franchise. So he felt it was the best film since the 2009 film. And while he did not hate Into Darkness, he does prefer Beyond. He felt it was extremely emotionally effective.
His Next Projects
Rico is working on a new short by Tommy Kraft, the creator of Horizon. He is excited to be working in person with Tommy on Runaway. Rico is one of the stars of that new movie! And he says Tommy is one of the best directors he has ever worked with.
If he was given the green light to kill any canon character, Rico would kill Q. This is the first time we’ve ever gotten Q as an answer. What an interesting story that would be. How powerful is Q? If Q was gone for good, then that could really show us what he is.
Look at that fan fiction plot bunny! Hell, that’s a plot bunny farm. It’s a plot bunny city.
Rico would love to write it himself.
His Workout Regimen
He has lost weight since last year. And he says it’s 80% diet and 20% exercise. Plus he tries to eat cleanly and organically. Rico does a lot of pushups.
