G & T Show STLV 2016 – Ryon Levitt of Cryptic Studios Interview
Ryon Levitt of Cryptic Studios
We enjoyed meeting with game designer Ryon Levitt from Cryptic Studios.
His forum handle is Melange at Cryptic and his title is Content Designer. He has been with Star Trek Online for just under a year. He joined last August (2015).
His Favorite Series
When he first started working at STO, he really loved The Next Generation. He had also watched some of Deep Space Nine. Since he was hired, he has been watching the show and is going straight through. He is about halfway through Voyager. Plus he has watched some of Star Trek: Enterprise in order to prepare himself to handle the Temporal Cold War.
While he is still in love with TNG, he also really likes Deep Space Nine. It has really grown on him. Plus Voyager has been an excellent surprise. He loves the chemistry on the show. Chakotay and Captain Janeway are both such great leaders.
His Time at STO
As a content designer, Ryon is responsible for creating missions. He worked on the Temporal Front Mission; Foregone Conclusions and Temporal Reckoning; and the Days of Doom queue. He also creates various fiction pieces for the website blog. He wrote the pieces for the Samurai and Na’kuhl story, Karma and Steel. Also, he wrote the most recent story about Admiral Leeta.
Ryon likes everything he has worked on. He feels Temporal Front, his first piece, was really special. But his favorite is probably the Days of Doom queue. He tried to make it so every character had something interesting to do. And he just loves how the story all comes together at the end. Mike says he feels this makes it easier for players to work together.
Days of Doom and Future Proof are related stories. This is due to them both being about time travel. However, Ryon would rather not link them too closely. He feels it is useful to keep them separately.
Then Terry Lynn asked Ryon our version of the Lipton questions. Ryon’s favorite series is TNG; his favorite crew is on Voyager. His starship is named the USS Shai Hulud; this is because he likes Dune. While he thought about that, Academy Award winner Doug Drexler arrived!
If he could kill off any main character (and make it stick!), it would be Chief O’Brien. While he loved TNG, O’Brien was so awkward to watch. Hence Ryon wants to put O’Brien out of his misery. Ryon loves the video game industry, but he would also enjoy working in the television or film industries. However, he is unsure whether he could be a straight-up writer for either.
If he had five slots on his starship, he would add Guinan as a chief advisor; Jadzia Dax as Science Officer; Riker as Commander; Torres as his Engineer; and probably Odo. Ryon’s favorite captain to emulate is Janeway.
We thank Ryon for the great interview!
