THE FAN DANCE
Is this thing on?

“I’ve always wanted to play to a captive audience…” Uhura
Hey all! Terilynn here… I know, I know, it’s been awhile! After I was laid-off from Massively.com I decided to revel in a life that didn’t have a weekly deadline attached to it. I didn’t think I would have enjoyed it as much as I have. I have to admit, the time actually helped me get used to my new real-life job. I haven’t worked in an office in a long time and it has taken a bit of getting used to.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all of The G&T Show listeners who offered up their ideas for the name of my new column. While PFDennis and Gingie took home the runner-up and first place prizes respectively, I ended up choosing the title that my co-host, Nick Minecci, had fired-off on the first day of the contest.
The Fan Dance will be a new column written on a semi-regular-if-not-completely-arbitrary time frame.
I think The Fan Dance best suits the new column too. Everyone remembers the fan dance performed by Uhura in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, right? (If you don’t, it’s probably because you’ve scrubbed the movie’s existence from your grey matter.) Uhura’s infamous dance has been made into an “emote” (a visual action that a character can exhibit) players can earn in Star Trek Online and it’s utterly adorable (in my opinion anyway) – so the name does have a connection to the game.
But it’s bigger than Star Trek Online.
While I do plan to cover Star Trek Online, I didn’t want to limit myself to just that one aspect of the Star Trek fandom. I wanted to give myself the freedom to spout-off on all areas of the Trek fandom as well as other genres and IPs. I love all sorts of stuff: gaming, movies, comics, and more and it was that aspect of my column that made me realize that the new title was much more fitting.
So without further ado, let’s start off with some news, shall we?
My amazing friend and former co-worker at Massively, Eliot Levebre, has petitioned the powers that be over at Massively/Joystiq/AOL to bring back The Captain’s Log feature at the site. Starting last week, his columns will (I think) run on a monthly basis and I ask all STO fans to ensure they pick up reading the column over there as well as this one. Eliot’s features will focus on the game and while we might overlap once in a while I’m pretty sure that our opinions and perspectives will vary widely. Also, I can cuss on my own column while Eliot has to behave himself. So… fuck yeah!
I’ve been so thrilled to see The G&T Show’s continued growth and uptick in popularity over the past two years. We recently celebrated the 100th Ask Dayton feature on the podcast! What’s an Ask Dayton, you inquire? Well, NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR, Dayton Ward has been offering up his own twisted version of “Dear Abby” for The G&T Show and has taken the time out of his insanely busy life to answer questions submitted by our listeners. The topics have run the gamut from the ridiculous to the sublime. He’s offered writing, story construction and plot development advice. He has also written hilarious responses to requests for prospective menu choices for family dinners. He has also written some pretty powerful and emotional responses to a few very serious questions. You can read Dayton’s responses here at The G&T Show archives as well as Dayton’s own blog site: The Fog of Ward. I’d like to extend my deepest personal gratitude to Dayton for being such a great sport with this far too shitty-paying gig. I can only hope that we’ve helped to sell a few of his books along the way. (Which you can do by clicking on that link to Amazon down below and searching for his name! All sorts of wonderful things will appear that you can buy!)
Finally, tying up today’s news is the pending unveiling of the new content in Star Trek Online’s Summer Event on Risa. Along with new floater colors (they’re like jetpacks!), players will be able to obtain new swimsuit and wetsuit apparel for their characters. There’s a new “feathered monkey” pet that players can raise, and a new jet-board that players can ride around the resort’s island. Dates haven’t been released yet, but the assumption is that the new event will go live with the patch this Thursday, June 5th.
Of course, I might be wrong. There is an advantage to writing for oneself – If I’m wrong, then I’m wrong! Whoop-de-fuckin’-do!
Thanks once again to everyone for your support over the years while I was with Massively and now as I start up this new feature at The G&T Show! If you have a question for Dayton Ward, or you wish to send me questions or comments about The Fan Dance, please send them to [email protected]!

Wanders around naked with palm fronds and leather boots…
Hey – Riker’s cabin is where, again?
